The Four C's of Perfect Wine Preservation

The Four C's of Perfect Wine Preservation

Wine Types & Storage

What types of wines do Coravin Wine Preservation Systems work with?

Coravin wine by the glass systems work with the following list of wines:

Still wine
Still wines in standard sized bottles are fine for use with any Coravin wine by the glass system for still wine, i.e. Coravin Timeless and Coravin Pivot™. Customers can utilize Coravin Screw Cap accessories and Timeless for screw top wines, then Coravin Pivot and its stoppers for any other closure.

Sparkling wine
Coravin Sparkling™ can be used to preserve sparkling wines in a standard or magnum sized bottles. This includes Champagne, Prosecco, Cava, and other sparkling wines.

Dessert & fortified wine
Due to higher sugar content of dessert wines, we recommend that you run through the Coravin system cleaning routine twice after pouring. Follow the instructions described in the "System Care & Cleaning" section under "Systems" above to ensure that none of the wine remains in the system.

Chilled wine
With Coravin Timeless systems, a chilled cork may reseal a bit slower. You should keep these bottles standing upright until it has resealed.

20+ year old wines
To reduce the risk of causing damage to an older cork when using the Coravin Timeless systems, use the Vintage Needle which you can purchase here, or in a set with other specialty needles here.

How long does the wine last?

When the Coravin Timeless system is used correctly, the wine in the bottle continues to evolve in the same way as if the System was never used, preserving what remains in the bottle for weeks, months or even years.

Coravin also offers the Pivot™ wine preservation system which allows you to extend the life of your everyday wines. For bottles you expect to finish over the course of days or weeks, the ingenious combination of the Pivot Stopper and the device keeps the remaining wine as fresh and flavorful as the day it was opened.

How should my wine be stored after using a Coravin System?

Whether using the Coravin Timeless or Pivot™ Systems, we recommend storing your wine bottles on their side in a temperature-controlled environment suitable for wine. Ensure the wine covers the cork surface inside the bottle so the cork does not dry out.

For chilled wines, the cork may take a bit longer to reseal – usually within a minute. Keep these standing vertically until the cork has resealed.

Bottles

What types of bottles can the Coravin System be used with?

Coravin wine preservation systems should be used with standard cylindrical shaped wine bottles (e.g. Bordeaux, Burgundy, or Riesling). The Coravin wine preservation systems are recommended for 750ml and 1.5l bottles – the Timeless clamps will not fit effectively nor will the Pivot™ stoppers fit on larger bottle sizes.

This does not apply to Coravin Sparkling stoppers, which can fit on any sparkling bottle, including magnum sized bottles.

Closures

What types of wine cork closures does the Coravin Timeless System work with?

Bottles closed with natural cork will reseal after pouring with the Coravin Timeless wine preservation system. Please keep in mind that a colder cork will take longer to reseal (about 1 minute). Leave chilled bottles standing upright after pouring to allow more time to reseal.

Coravin Timeless systems will also work with agglomerated cork, multi-piece cork, and twin top cork. Be careful when using bottles with wax seals. A thin wax coating will not affect usage – it is malleable enough that it will not damage the needle or hinder your ability to access wine. A thick waxy disc underneath the foil, most common in vintage Ports, can cause serious damage to the needle.

Coravin Timeless systems DO NOT work with glass closures. This type of closure will cause permanent damage to the Coravin needle. Customers should utilize Coravin Pivot to preserve bottles with glass closures.

Do Coravin Timeless Systems work with synthetic wine closures?

While a synthetic closure will not damage your Timeless Needle, the closure will not reseal, and thus permit oxidation after some time. If you access a bottle with a synthetic closure using a Coravin Timeless system, store it upright to ensure that it does not leak.

If you are pouring from a bottle with a synthetic cork, we recommend you consider the Coravin Pivot™. Pivot is a wine preservation option that allows you to extend the life of your everyday wines. For bottles you expect to finish over the course of days or weeks, the ingenious combination of the Pivot Stopper and the device keeps the remaining wine fresh for up to 4 weeks ensuring the last glass is just as amazing as the first.

For sparkling wines, use Coravin Sparkling™.

Do Coravin Timeless Systems perform equally well with all natural cork closures?

Coravin Timeless systems works only as well as the cork that is closing the bottle. If the cork in the bottle is of poor quality, it is likely that the cork will not effectively protect the wine. This is true regardless of whether you use the Timeless system or not.

Unfortunately, the quality of cork varies. It depends upon when and where it was harvested as well as manufacturing techniques. Over time, corks can become brittle, dry and fragile, especially when a bottle is not stored properly.
